About the factory presets

Fractal Audio's products have factory presets installed: 3 sets of 128 presets (Banks A, B and C). The presets demonstrate amp tones (Bank A) and effects (Bank B and C). The VP4 has banks of 4 presets, from A to Z (104 in total).

Factory presets occupy regular preset slots, which are not read-only. This means that you can empty or overwrite factory presets. You can always restore them, see below.

Fractal Audio updates the factory presets periodically and makes them available on the website and the user forum. Older versions can be downloaded from the unofficial archive

(Re)install factory presets

Fractal Audio provides a separate Bank file for each bank:

  • Bank A (000-127)
  • Bank B (128-255)
  • Bank C (256-383)

In addition, an All-Banks file that contains all three banks is included. Always read the included READ_ME.txt file for more up-to-date information.

The VP4 has a single bank with all factory presets.

Use Fractal-Bot, either the embedded version inside an editor, or by using the standalone version, to upload a .syx bank file to the hardware.

To select and import an individual preset from a bank file, use the Import function in Edit; Select a bank first and then pick the preset to import. Alternately, the Preset Manager in the editor can display all the presets contained in a bank or all-banks file, allowing you to select desired presets and drag them to specific slots. In the left browser pane drag or browse to the desired bank file and let the editor scan the file.

Don't forget to refresh the list of presets in the editor's Preset Picker window or Manage Presets window, afterwards. Clicking the Refresh Button (Refresh button) is the quick way.

Audition factory presets

Points of interest when auditioning factory presets:

The previous owner could have modified, moved, or deleted factory presets, which can change your perception of how the presets and the modeler actually sounds. Ensuring the unit is in a factory fresh state is the first step toward your best experience.
  • The presets are configured for FRFR output devices such as studio monitors, headphones, etc., with Amp Modeling and Cab Modeling enabled in the Setup menu, and using the instrument input on the device.
  • The VP4 factory presets are split in banks, dedicated to different configurations and instruments: PRE, POST, Bass/Acoustic, 4CM.
  • If possible, play the presets in stereo, with the volume turned up, to hear the presets at their best. If you're running mono, and audio output in the Setup menu is set to Sum L+R, phase cancellation may occur. When using output mode Copy L>R in the Setup menu, you'll lose the part of the signal that's hardwired to the right channel. That might be a Ping Pong delay or a stereo Cab block with both sides hard-panned.
  • For easier control, use the editor.
  • The factory presets often use External 1 to control various parameters in Wah, VolPan, Rotary, Delay, and probably other blocks.
By default, the pedal will be disabled when it is toe-up/heel-down. To take advantage of these defaults confirm that your foot controller is defined correctly. See GLOBAL EXPRESSION SETUP in the Introduction section of the Owners Manuals for more information.
  • Preset output levels can vary from preset to preset, though a great effort is made to minimize this. If a factory preset makes the Out 1 Clip LED blink, the overall signal level in the digital domain is too hot. To solve this, turn down Level in the Amp block or in the Global EQ.
  • If you're wondering why an amp model in a factory preset doesn't sound exactly the same as your own amplifier, read Why Your Amp Doesn't Sound Like Our Amp.
  • Just like real amps, presets are sensitive to the type of guitar and its pickups.
  • If you think you've encountered an issue with a factory preset, report it as a possible bug on the user forum.

FRACTAL AUDIO QUOTES

[1] The presets were dialed in loud so as to be sure the Fletcher-Munson effect did not influence the sound.

[2] I use and prefer low output pickups and the presets work fine for me. I just consider them a starting point as everyone should.

[3] (Cygnus v16) I tested every preset on three guitars this time around: 1) Anderson HSS, 2) American Deluxe Strat SSS 3) Kiesel Vader long scale HH (BareKnuckle). Multiple beta testers also went through the set, and Cliff reviewed Bank A.

Firmware updates

Firmware updates may have an impact on the installed factory presets.

After installing new firmware, Amp blocks have to be reset only if the firmware release notes say so. Read this: Reset the Amp

Read these for more information:

Axe-Fx III - FM3 - FM9

The Axe-Fx III, FM9 and FM3 have 384 factory presets, divided over 3 banks: A, B, and C. The factory presets use Input 1 (instrument) and Output 1 with amplifier and speaker cabinet modeling and are configured for stereo output. You can use an expression pedal in presets which use External Controller 1. See your modeler's manual for information how to configure this.

The list below is based on firmware 19.02 (Cygnus) for the Axe-Fx III.

FRACTAL AUDIO QUOTES

[4] Axe-Fx III owners may notice the suffix "FM3" or slight variations in the names of some of the FM3 presets. This was done to indicate that the preset has changed. In some cases, the Axe-Fx presets were larger and wouldn't fit. In other cases, we took advantage of capabilities that were new or improved since those presets were originally created (some in the time of the Ultra!). In other cases, "bonus scenes" or features were added. We also replaced some near-duplicate presets with new creations.

The same applies to FM9 factory presets.

FX8

Cooper Carter compiled a list of all FX8 factory presets, including the amps (traditional and amp models) that were used when creating them. Download the list (version: August 2015)

If you place the FX8 in front of your amp, you won't experience the factory presets as they are intended. Some of these are configured for POST only (FX8 in the effects loop of an amp) or 4CM. An easy way to overcome this, is connecting a patch cable between OUT [PRE] L MONO and IN [POST] L, and connecting OUT [POST] L to the amp.

Some factory presets are configured for stereo output and won't sound like they should in a mono setup.
