Installing new versions of factory presets

Fractal Audio's products have factory presets installed. These are updated periodically for current products. They can be downloaded from the website.

There are three banks: A, B and C. Each bank contains 127 presets. Use Fractal-Bot to upload a single bank to the hardware, or all banks at once.

To select and upload individual presets from a bank, use the software editor's Import function to select a bank first and then pick the preset to import.

Video: How to load new factory presets

When using the editor, don't forget to refresh the list of presets in Preset Picker or Manage Presets afterwards.

Auditioning factory presets

Just like real amps, presets are sensitive to the type of guitar and its pickups.

Preset output levels can vary from preset to preset. If a factory preset makes the Out 1 Clip LED blink, the overall signal level in the digital domain is too hot. To solve this, turn down Level in the Amp block or in the Global EQ.

If possible, play factory presets in stereo to hear the presets at their very best.

If you're running mono, and audio output in the I/O menu is set to “Sum L+R”, phase cancellation may occur. This can happen if the preset contains an Enhancer block in Classic Mode, or a micro delay in the Cab block. Or when a preset contains a Delay block with the Phase Rev parameter engaged.

When using output mode "Copy L>R" in the I/O menu, you'll lose the part of the signal that's hardwired to the right channel. That might be a Ping Pong delay, or a stereo Cab block with both sides hard-panned.

"The presets were dialed in loud so as to be sure the Fletcher-Munson effect did not influence the sound." [1]

"I use and prefer low output pickups and the presets work fine for me. I just consider them a starting point as everyone should." [2]

(Cygnus v16) "I tested every preset on three guitars this time around: 1) Anderson HSS, 2) American Deluxe Strat SSS 3) Kiesel Vader long scale HH (BareKnuckle). Multiple beta testers also went through the set, and Cliff reviewed Bank A." [3]

If you wonder why an amp model in a factory preset doesn't sound exactly the same your own amplifier, read this: Why Your Amp Doesn't Sound Like Our Amp.

Axe-Fx III - FM3 - FM9

Iii-front-transparent-1024x271.png FM3-front.png

The Axe-Fx III, FM9 and FM3 have 384 factory presets, divided over 3 banks: A, B and C. The factory presets use Input 1 (instrument) and Output 1 with amplifier and speaker cabinet modeling and are configured for stereo output. You can use an expression pedal in presets which use External Controller 1.

The list below is based on firmware 16.xx (Cygnus) for the Axe-Fx III, 4.0 (Cygnus) for the FM3 and 1.x for the FM9. FM9 presets are the same as those for the Axe-Fx III, except when noted.

"Axe-Fx III owners may notice the suffix "FM3" or slight variations in the names of some of the FM3 presets. This was done to indicate that the preset has changed. In some cases, the Axe-Fx presets were larger and wouldn't fit. In other cases, we took advantage of capabilities that were new or improved since those presets were originally created (some in the time of the Ultra!). In other cases, "bonus scenes" or features were added. We also replaced some near-duplicate presets with new creations." [4]

Long-sustaining stereo delay patterns from the Megatap Delay and Plex Delay blocks create a serene atmosphere. The Pitch block in scene 3 reacts to the playing (envelope follower). Play slowly. Amp: Plexi.

106 - CRYSTAL SCIONS
Automatic volume swells, Multitap Delay diffusor, crystals effect, "cavern" reverb, with modulation effects, create blooming stereo sci-fi soundscapes. External Controller 1 controls frequency. Play slowly. Amp: Deluxe Tweed. The preset title possibly refers to the game Final Fantasy. FM3: lite version.

107 - JEFF GETS READY
Based on the chorused clean and driven guitar sounds in "People Get Ready" by Rod Stewart and Jeff Beck. Amp: 59 Bassguy.

108 - FILTERING FUNK
Funky stuff from a combination of envelope filter and ring modulator. A Scene Controller switches the frequency of the ring modulator per scene. An added 5th in scene 5 gets into synth territory. In scene 7 External Controller 1 controls a delay. Scene 8 simulates a bass guitar. Play single notes. Amp: CA OD-2.

109 - FLY BY NIGHT
Based on the guitar sounds in "Fly By Night" by Rush. Amps: Hipower and Brit Silver, Vibrato Lux and Hipower. FM3: single amp. Also try Amp 1, channel B.

110 - REICH-LIKE
The title refers to composer Steve Reich, famous for his pieces based on repetition. This preset creates layers of sound through a delay with long feedback. Watch the Tempo LED... External Controller 1 ends the delay feedback. Amp: Shiver.

111 - ECHO DEVA III // ECHO D. FM3
Delay feedback loop, using External Controller 1 for feedback (oscillation) and LFO for wow and flutter, dual amp blocks, and modulation effects. Amps: Class-A 30W. FM3: single amp and scene controllers.

112 - CLIFFS OF DOVER
Based on Eric Johnson's trademark driven sound as in "Cliffs of Dover". Amp: Plexi, with a Tube Driver.

113 - DIAMONIQUE RAIN // MODULATED MAYHEM
Ambient soundscapes with automatic volume swells and shifted detuned stereo delays from Plex Delays. Play slowly. Amp: Band-Commander. FM3: ping pong delay, phaser and resonator and Friedman amp.

114 - COMPURHYTHM // COMPY JAM
Complex preset that turns the device into a drum computer. External Controller 1 generates sort of a drum fill. FM3: lite version.

115 - GNOME MAN'S LANDS // GNOME-MANS LAND FM3
Pitch-shifted 100% wet delay trails (no dry), panned left/right by an LFO, with reverb from a Multitap Delay. Amp: USA IIC+. FM3: alternative version.

116 - STEVENS REBEL YELL // STEVENS REBEL FM3
Preset by Fractal Audio artist Steve Stevens, reproducing the guitar sound in Billy Idol's Rebel Yell. Uses a Tone Match block instead of a cab (not on FM3). External Controller 1 introduces the raygun effect in a scene. Amp: Atomica High.

117 - HEVY DEVY
Preset by Fractal Audio artist Devin Townsend. Amps: various.

118 - PETE-A-PALOOZA // PETE-FEST FM3
Preset by tone connoisseur Pete Thorn. Amps: various.

119 - LARRY MITCHELL NY STEAK // LARRY MITCHELL NY 1990
Creative preset by Fractal Audio artist Larry Mitchell. Amps: various.

120 - MARK DAY'S RECTO CYGNUS // MARK DAY'S RECTO FM3
Massive high-gain preset by in-house Fractal Audio artist Mark "too much gain" Day. Amp: Recto.

121 - FREMEN'S DRONES OF ARRAKIS // FREMEN'S MINI DRONES
Preset by preset designer Fremen: solo over synth drone chords, with ducking delay. Amp: USA IIC++. The title refers to the Dune series. FM3: one synth instead of two.

122 - BRETT'S PARTY PACK
Preset by Fractal Audio artist Brett Kingman ("Burgs"), featuring various amp models.

123 - BRETT'S PARTY PACK 2
Another preset by Brett Kingman ("Burgs"), featuring the ODS-100 and Triptik amp models.

124 - AUSTIN BUDDY'S XTCs
Preset by preset designer AustinBuddy, featuring the Euro Blue and Red (Bogner Ecstasy) models. Control Switch 2 controls the Input Boost in the amp block.

125 - LEON'S LIVE // LEON'S LIVE FM3
Gig preset by Fractal Audio artist and YouTuber Leon Todd. Demonstrates the use of multiband compression and the Multitap Delay, and EQ-ing to create a lo-fi radio sound. External Controller 1 engages the Pitch block for pitch detuning. Also uses Control Switches. Amps: USA Lead (high gain) and Band-Commander (clean). Breakdown by Leon Todd FM3: lite version.

126 - OUT1:FOH OUT2:CAB
This preset shows how to send a signal with cab modeling to Front-Of-House (Out 1), and a second signal without cab modeling to a separate output (Out 2) to feed a power amplifier with a traditional guitar cabinet.

127 - AMP MATCH TEMPLATE // PERFORMANCE TUTORIAL
Template for matching the sound of real amplifiers using Tone Match. Pedal 2 (directly connected to the Axe-Fx) enables "Reference Solo". More information about Tone Matching The FM3 has an alternative preset because it doesn't support Tone Match.

128 - BYPASS
All inputs are connected straight to the outputs, so the input signal is the output signal, effectively creating a bypass and DI-signals from all analog outputs.

FX8

FX8-mk2-top.jpg

Cooper Carter compiled a list of all FX8 factory presets, including the amps (traditional and amp models) that were used when creating them. Download the list (version: August 2015)

If you place the FX8 in front of your amp, you won't experience the factory presets as they are intended. Some of these are configured for POST only (FX8 in the effects loop of an amp) or 4CM. An easy way to overcome this, is connecting a patch cable between OUT [PRE] L MONO and IN [POST] L, and connecting OUT [POST] L to the amp.

Some factory presets are configured for stereo output and won't sound like they should in a mono setup.
