Installing new versions of factory presets

Fractal Audio's products have factory presets installed. These are updated periodically for current products. They can be downloaded from the website.

Use Fractal-Bot to upload entire factory preset banks to the hardware.

To select and upload individual presets from a bank, use the software editor's Import function to select a bank first and then pick the preset to import.

Auditioning factory presets

Just like real amps, presets are sensitive to the type of guitar and its pickups.

Preset output levels can vary from preset to preset. If a factory preset makes the Out 1 Clip LED blink, the overall signal level in the digital domain is too hot. To solve this, turn down Level in the Amp block or in the Global EQ.

If possible, play factory presets in stereo to hear the presets at their very best.

If you're running mono, and audio output in the I/O menu is set to “Sum L+R”, phase cancellation may occur. This can happen if the preset contains an Enhancer block in Classic Mode, or a micro delay in the Cab block. Or when a preset contains a Delay block with the Phase Rev parameter engaged.

When using output mode "Copy L>R" in the I/O menu, you'll lose the part of the signal that's hardwired to the right channel. That might be a Ping Pong delay, or a stereo Cab block with both sides hard-panned.

"The presets were dialed in loud so as to be sure the Fletcher-Munson effect did not influence the sound." source

"I use and prefer low output pickups and the presets work fine for me. I just consider them a starting point as everyone should." source

(Cygnus v16) "I tested every preset on three guitars this time around: 1) Anderson HSS, 2) American Deluxe Strat SSS 3) Kiesel Vader long scale HH (BareKnuckle). Multiple beta testers also went through the set, and Cliff reviewed Bank A." [1]

If you wonder why an amp model in a factory preset doesn't sound exactly the same your own amplifier, read this: Why Your Amp Doesn't Sound Like Our Amp.

Old FM3 factory presets (before firmware 4)

FM3-front.png

The FM3 has 384 factory presets, divided over 3 banks (A B C). The factory presets use Input 1 (instrument) and Output 1 with amplifier and speaker cabinet modeling and are configured for stereo output. You can use an expression pedal in presets which have External Controller 1 configured.

Many presets were migrated from the Axe-Fx III and adapted. Some are FM3 originals.

"Axe-Fx III owners may notice the suffix "FM3" or slight variations in the names of some of the FM3 presets. This was done to indicate that the preset has changed. In some cases, the Axe-Fx presets were larger and wouldn't fit. In other cases, we took advantage of capabilities that were new or improved since those presets were originally created (some in the time of the Ultra!). In other cases, "bonus scenes" or features were added. We also replaced some near-duplicate presets with new creations. To the extent possible, I added at least three scenes to many of the presets so you would have something to explore." source

The list below is based on firmware 1.06.

FX8

FX8-mk2-top.jpg

Cooper Carter compiled a list of all FX8 factory presets, including the amps (traditional and amp models) that were used when creating them. Download the list (version: August 2015)

If you place the FX8 in front of your amp, you won't experience the factory presets as they are intended. Some of these are configured for POST only (FX8 in the effects loop of an amp) or 4CM. An easy way to overcome this, is connecting a patch cable between OUT [PRE] L MONO and IN [POST] L, and connecting OUT [POST] L to the amp.

Some factory presets are configured for stereo output and won't sound like they should in a mono setup.
