Processors and USB
Axe-Fx III
The Axe-Fx III has a dedicated 16-core, 500 MHz USB microcontroller. USB 2.0 is used to connect the unit to a computer, to run software editors and Fractal-Bot.

Windows – Requires installing a USB driver. Requires Windows 7 SP1 or newer.

Mac – No driver required (class compliant). Requires OS X 10.6.8 for MIDI over USB, 10.9 for USB Audio.

"Still USB-over-MIDI but at least 10x faster." source

"The Axe-Fx III has a new driver . I just tested it under Reaper and was able to set the buffer size to 8 with no problems. I typically have it at 256 because I monitor directly from the output but it seems to be working fine on the lowest setting."

"I can only get 8 to work on my fastest machine with nothing else running. 16 works on all my machines except my Macbook which I have to use 64." source

"The USB buffer size on the Axe-Fx III itself goes all the way down to 8. 256 is the highest setting and is the (conservative) default value." source

Note: the quotes above apply to the Windows driver. Macs typically require a higher buffer setting to prevent audio distortion. From the Axe-Fx III Owner's Manual:

“Set this to lower values for less latency with USB Audio, set to higher values if you are experiencing distorted audio. Stop USB audio streaming when changing this value so as to allow the buffer to reset properly. Streaming can be stopped by closing the application sending data to the Axe-Fx III or by disconnecting the USB cable."

USB performance can be monitored on the Meters page of the Home menu, or in the Utilities menu.

The USB subsystem boots instantly on power on, it doesn't depend on the DSP. The USB subsystem does need some time to settle down though. It's recommended to wait a minute or so, before launching the editor.

Support for USB Audio: 16 (8x8) channels (8 in, 8 out). Fixed at 48 kHz, 24-bit.

"The effective throughput of USB 2.0 is roughly 280 Mb/s. One channel of audio is 48000 samples/s * 24 bits/sample = 1.152 Mb/s. Theoretically you could transfer over 200 channels of audio on USB 2.0." source

USB In (from Axe-Fx III to Computer):

1+2: Output 1 (regular stereo output).

3+4: Output 2 (regular stereo output).

5+6: Input 1 (copy of signal at front/rear Instrument input, for reamping, mono).

7+8: Input 2 (copy of signal at Input 2, stereo).

USB Out (from computer to Axe-Fx III):

1+2: Routed to physical Output 1 L+R (audio from computer, added to OUT1).

3+4: Routed to physical Output 2 L+R (audio from computer, i/e/ backing tracks that can be processed separately).

5+6: Routed to the Grid via INPUT 1 block when its source is set to USB (for reamping).

7+8: Routed to the Grid via the dedicated INPUT USB block (for additional computer audio).

Firmware 2.01 adds the ability to select the source of USB Outputs 7,8 (to computer). Inputs 2-4 can be assigned to USB 7,8.

Firmware 2.03 adds the ability to adjust the level of the incoming USB signal from a computer or other USB device.

A USB audio sound source can be placed anywhere on the grid with its own dedicated block.

Incoming sound from USB Audio is mixed with the signal that comes out at Output 1. To change this, adjust the sound settings on the computer.
* Mac: see section 3 of the Owner's manual.
* Windows: use ASIO.

Axe-Fx III and iOS devices
The Axe-Fx III supports a direct connection to iOS devices, using Apple's Lightning-to-USB Camera Adapter. This means that you can use apps such as SetListMaker and BandHelper on an iPad without requiring an additional MIDI-to-USB interface (which the Axe-Fx II does require). The connection also supports USB Audio between the III and the iOS device.

Axe-Fx II
To connect the Axe-Fx II through USB a driver (Windows) or firmware installer (Mac) must be downloaded to the device first from a computer. If it's not installed, utilities such as Axe-Edit, Fractal-Bot and Cab-Lab won't recognize the Axe-Fx II. Also, tablets such as an iPad do not connect to the Axe-Fx II, until the support system has been downloaded to the unit first (without power cycling).

USB Download driver/installer for Mac and Windows

Windows – The Axe-Fx II is an Audio Class 2.0 compliant device. A class-compliant device requires no drivers. The drivers are provided by the OS manufacturer. Audio Class 2.0 also encompasses MIDI-over-USB. Microsoft does not support Audio Class 2.0. Therefore FAS provides a driver for Windows systems. The driver for Windows contains both the firmware installer and the audio drivers.

Apple – Apple does support Audio Class 2.0, but poorly. To overcome this, you can increase the buffer size in the Axe-Fx II's I/O > Audio menu. The driver for Macs is NOT an audio driver. It is a firmware installer. The Axe-Fx II uses a "soft" USB controller. It gets its code from the host computer. When you turn the Axe-Fx II on it requests firmware from the host. This is superior to a hard-coded controller in that updates merely require a new host image rather than reflashing the controller.

"The driver that we supply for OS-X computers is NOT an audio driver. It is a firmware installer. The Axe-Fx II uses a "soft" USB controller. It gets its code from the host computer. When you turn the Axe-Fx II on it requests firmware from the host. This is superior to a hard-coded controller in that updates merely require a new host image rather than reflashing the controller."

Linux – read this.

The USB connection supports USB-to-MIDI, so there's no need to use a MIDI interface in most cases. An external audio interface is required when connecting the analog Axe-Fx II outputs to a computer.

USB Audio is supported.

Lower USB Buffer Size in I/O > Audio for less latency, increase when experiencing distorted audio. You should stop USB audio streaming when changing this value so as to allow the buffer to reset properly. Streaming can be stopped by closing the application sending data to the Axe-Fx or by disconnecting the USB cable.

The meters in the Utility menu display the USB performance. Ideally the bar should be at around 50%. If the bar sinks all the way to the bottom or goes all the way to the top, then the buffer may under/overflow and the USB buffer size should be increased. The number of buffer errors that have occurred since the last buffer reset is indicated above the bar graph.

USB Level in I/O > Audio sets the level of the USB input signal sent to the main outputs. If you don't hear anything when monitoring the Axe-Fx through a computer, check this parameter. Also verify the USB/DIGI OUT setting.

USB Audio rate is fixed at 48 kHz, 24-bits.

"The Axe-Fx II USB is 24 bits. This is 144.7 dB of dynamic range. Full-scale is about +20 dBu. So even if your guitar is -20 dBu (-40 dB re. FS) you still have over 100 dB of dynamic range. A typical single coil pickup can easily exceed -20 dBu. A humbucker can easily exceed 0 dBu. Full-scale of 20 dBu gives you a few bits of headroom in case of very hot pickups. The self noise of a guitar pickup and associated electronics limits its dynamic range to less than 100 dB typically." And: "The digital bit depth on the USB and Digital I/O exceeds both the dynamic range of the Axe-Fx itself and certainly that of any guitar. Furthermore the bit depth is sufficient to fully capture the dynamic range of a guitar while still maintaining +20 dBu as full-scale." source

"The hardware is incapable of doing 4x4. The only choices are 3x3 or 4x2 and Logic doesn't work with 3x3. We also had some issues with 3x3 in Windows 7 IIRC." source

AX8 and FX8
The AX8 and FX8 have an USB 2.0 type B port (host). It's fully class-compliant. USB is used to connect the unit to a computer, to run software editors and Fractal-Bot. No driver required.

USB Audio is not supported.

USB-B to USB-C
The Axe-Fx II, AX8 and FX8 have USB-B ports. Directly connecting these to a computer with a USB-C port, like a MacBook, can cause issues when using a straight USB-B to USB-C cable. To start, always connect the cable to the computer first. Sometimes an adapter (multiport) has to be placed inbetween to make things work.

The Axe-Fx III doesn't have this issue.

USB-B to USB-C cables are hard to find. Here's one from Belkin.

USB Adapter Mode
The Axe-Fx II can be used as an USB-to-MIDI interface, for example to update the firmware on the MFC-101 using Fractal-Bot. This is explained in the Fractal-Bot manual.

"The USB Adapter feature was added for simple USB-to-MIDI functionality, specifically firmware updates for the MFC-101. It is a low priority task since audio processing is the Axe-Fx's primary usage. Latency is not guaranteed. It is not intended as anything more than a no-frills, simple MIDI adapter for non-critical tasks." source

USB Adapter Mode has not been implemented in the Axe-Fx III.
Troubleshooting USB
Maximum length of USB cables
"The Axe-Fx III moves a LOT more data over USB than the II. The audio is 8x8 vs. 4x2 and the MIDI-Over-USB interface runs 10-100x faster. Therefore it is important that the cable adhere to specifications (5m max). ==USB ground loop==

High-pitched noise may be caused by a ground loop.

"The USB spec calls for grounding the cable at both ends (mistake). This can create an USB ground loop. Make sure everything is plugged into the same outlet strip." source

Screen flicker caused by USB
(Axe-Fx II) "An occasional flicker when hooked up to USB is not unusual. This is due to the screen redraw being interrupted by the USB thread." source

USB connection problem? Check the cable
When experiencing problems such as dropped connections or worse, always replace the USB cable first. Even if the cable works with other devices, it may be faulty.

Also, use cables which are as short as possible. Cable length is a frequent cause of intermittent failures.

Distorted audio playback
When audio playback through the Axe-Fx results in distorted audio, increase the USB buffer size.

USB performance can be monitored in Utilities.

Solving audio problems on Macs
If you have issues using USB with a Mac, try cleaning all audio preferences as explained here.

Linux
The Axe-Fx II can work as an audio and MIDI interface just as it does on Windows or OS X, although Linux is not supported officially.

Procedure:
* Before firmware is loaded the device will be reported as a USB device with Vendor ID 2466 and Product ID 0003.
* After the USB controller gets loaded with its firmware the Axe-Fx II will be recognized as a USB soundcard device with Vendor ID 2466 and Product ID 8003.
* For a named output when using lsusb, adequate entries for Fractal Audio Systems and the Axe-Fx II must be added to "usb.ids" (typically under /usr/share/misc/usb.ids). See source

Loading the USB firmware:
* Ubuntu 16.04 and above users can use AlbertA's PPA and install the axefx2-usb-firmware package (sudo add-apt-repository ppa:albaguirre/axe-fx2 && sudo apt update && sudo apt install axefx2-usb-firmware)
* For others, volt created an install script package that is available for download here.

Since the Axe-Fx II is an Audio Class 2.0 compliant device no additional drivers are needed. The Linux kernel already supports such devices. However, depending on your kernel version, there can be some issues:
* For systems with a kernel older than 3.10, you will need to patch clock.c in the ALSA's usb-audio kernel module (<linux>/sound/usb/clock.c). See more here.
* For systems with a kernel older than 4.10, the ALSA usb-audio driver may cause overflows or underflows at the device since there is no proper sync applied. A patch is available here. See more here.
** Ubuntu 16.04/16.10 users can use AlbertA's PPA and install the snd-usb-audio-dkms package which installs the patched kernel module (DKMS actually builds it for your running kernel and rebuilds any time there's a kernel update).
** To verify check the “USB” bar graph in Utility->Status which displays the amount of data in the USB FIFO buffer. Ideally the bar should be at around 50%. The number of buffer errors that have occurred since the last buffer reset is indicated above the bar graph - this should be zero when the driver is functioning correctly.
Connecting FracPad III to mobile device
Android (wired)
This requires a compatible USB adapter, called "USB OTG". This works with the AX8, FX8 and Axe-Fx II/III models.

No reliable wireless solution (Bluetooth) has been found yet, but most functions will be ok on bluetooth.

AxeFx II and iOS (wired and wireless)
Connecting FracPad: Android
* Android USB: this requires a compatible USB adapter, called "USB OTG". This works on AX8 and Axe-Fx II models.
* Android Bluetooth: no valid solution has been found yet.

Connecting FracPad: iOS
* iOS USB: required when using the AX8 (the AX8 doesn't support editing through MIDI). Use the "USB camera adapter" for Apple devices.
* iOS MIDI: required when using the Axe-Fx II (the Axe-Fx II doesn't have a USB host). Use a 3rd party iOS MIDI interface sucha as iRig2 MIDI, or a general purpose USB-MIDI interface like Roland's UM-One in conjunction with the "USB camera adapter" for Apple devices.
* iOS Bluetooth: Bluetooth Low Energy is required, so check that your iDevice handles Bluetooth LE (Bluetooth 4.0+). This means at least iPad3 or iPhone4s (source).
** AX8: use the Yamaha UD-BT01 and be sure to upgrade it to firmware 1.03 with the yamaha ud/md utility available on the US appstore. Launch the app "Midimittr" (AppStore), followed by FracPad.
__TOC__

X/Y switching: supported by which Fractal Audio products?
* Axe-Fx II: yes.
* MFC-101: yes.
* AX8: yes.
* FX8: yes.

About X/Y switching
* Cliff's comments:
** "The idea behind X/Y is that people often have multiple distortion/chorus/delay/etc. pedals on their board but they rarely have more than one on at a time. So rather than creating more instances of effects, which sucks up CPU, have each instance capable of more than one sound."
* X/Y-switching occurs at block level, not at preset level.
* There's no crossfading when switching between X and Y. If you want crossfading, use Scene Controllers as an alternative to X/Y switching.

Blocks with X/Y support
* Axe-Fx II Mark I and II: Amp, Cab, Chorus, Delay, Drive, Flanger, Phaser, Pitch, Reverb, Wah, Rotary.
* Axe-Fx II XL and XL+: Amp, Cab, Chorus, Compressor/Dynamics, Delay, Drive, Flanger, GEQ, Gate, Mixer, PEQ, Phaser, Pitch, Rotary, Reverb, Tremolo, Wah.
* AX8: Amp, Cab, Chorus, Compressor/Dynamics, Delay, Drive, Filter, Flanger, Gate, Multi Delay, Phaser, Pitch, Rotary, Reverb, Tremolo, Wah.
* FX8: Chorus, Compressor/Dynamics, Delay, Drive, Filter, Flanger, Gate, MIDI, Multi Delay, Phaser, Pitch, Relay, Rotary, Reverb, Tremolo, Wah.
* Cliff's comments:
** "Any blocks that have X/Y on the XL but not on the Mark II will not import the bypass state as that is stored differently. You need to manually adjust the bypass state after import." source

X/Y switching and scenes
* The X/Y state of an effect can vary per Scene. This is one of the advantages of using scenes.

X/Y switching on the hardware
* Axe-Fx II:
** Use the dedicated X/Y buttons on the front panel.
** You can use the X/Y buttons on the front panel also as Quick-Jump buttons to quickly display the EDIT menu of specific blocks, assigned in I/O.
* FX8 and AX8:
** Hold a switch (1-8) to alternate between X and Y. If the LED is amber lit, Y is active.
** You can also assign one of the 3 switches at the right to "Single X/Y" or "Sticky X/Y".
** You can adjust the switch "hold" time in the Global menu.
** You can also switch an effect between X and Y on the grid, using a shortcut key.

X/Y switching in the software editors
* Press the "X" key on the keyboard to switch a block between X and Y in the software editor.
* The X/Y-states of the blocks are displayed in the software editor, without needing to select the block first.

X/Y indication
* The X/Y state of effects blocks is shown in the software editors.
* On the AX8 hardware the current X/Y state of the selected block is shown at the bottom of the Layout page.
* On the Axe-Fx II and FX8 hardware the current X/Y state of the selected block is shown in an effect block's EDIT menu (not on the Layout page).

X/Y switching and CPU usage
* CPU usage is calculated using the current state of a block (X or Y). When switching an effect between X and Y, CPU usage may change.

Copying and swapping X/Y settings
* X and Y effect settings can be copied using the front panel of the Axe-Fx II: press X or Y twice quickly.
* Swapping X and Y always requires use of a software editor.

Resetting effect parameters and X/Y settings
* Resetting an effect block on the hardware resets the parameters to their default values. This only applies to the current state: X or Y. To reset the entire block, switch to the other state and repeat the process (or use the software editor to initialize the entire block).

Modified parameters and X/Y settings
* When a controller is assigned to a parameter, it always applies to both X and Y. It's not possible to have different modifier settings for X and Y, the architecture doesn't allow for this. source

Recall Effect and X/Y settings
* Using Recall Effect on the Axe-Fx II and AX8 will always import all effect block settings: X and Y. So you can't use Recall Effect for just X or just Y. Use the software editor instead to copy and paste X-only or Y-only settings.

Using X/Y switching to compare sounds and settings
* X/Y switching offers an easy way to compare sounds when tweaking. Example:
*# Go to an AMP block, state "X".
*# Double-click "Y" on the front panel to copy the "X" settings into "Y".
*# Select X or Y and adjust settings.
*# Now alternate between X and Y to see and hear the differences.
* You can also do this in the software editor.
* This also offers an easy method to quickly see where effect settings differ from default, by resetting X or Y to default.
* An alternative approach to comparing sounds on the Axe-Fx II: save a preset as a Snapshot in the editor. Select Revert to get the original sound back. Then drag and drop the snapshot file into the editor.

X/Y switching on the MFC-101 and other MIDI controllers
* There's a dedicated MIDI CC for most blocks that offer X/Y switching. Assign this CC to a switch to alternate between X and Y.
* You can configure X/Y effect blocks to engage the effect in either X or Y mode. Example: (source)
*# IA Switch 1, ON message: DELAY 1 ON, DELAY 1 X (CC#47:127, CC#106: 127)
*# IA Switch 1, OFF message: DELAY 1 OFF, DELAY 1 X (CC#47:0, CC#106: 127)
*# IA Switch 2, OFF message: DELAY 1 ON, DELAY 1 Y (CC#47:127, CC#106: 0)
*# IA Switch 2, OFF message: DELAY 1 OFF, DELAY 1 Y (CC#47:0, CC#106: 0)
* Or use a controller's "group" or'"linked switches" feature.
* On the MFC-101 X is green, Y is red. If you prefer the default state to be green, use Y as the default state.

X/Y switching: supported by which Fractal Audio products?
* Axe-Fx II: yes.
* MFC-101: yes.
* AX8: yes.
* FX8: yes.

About X/Y switching
* Cliff's comments:

* Axe-Fx II Mark I and II: Amp, Cab, Chorus, Delay, Drive, Flanger, Phaser, Pitch, Reverb, Wah, MultiTap, Rotary.
* Axe-Fx II XL and XL+: Amp, Cab, Chorus, Compressor/Dynamics, Delay, Drive, Flanger, GEQ, Gate, Mixer, PEQ, Phaser, Pitch, Rotary, Reverb, Tremolo, Wah.
* AX8: Amp, Cab, Chorus, Compressor/Dynamics, Delay, Drive, Filter, Flanger, Gate, Multi Delay, Phaser, Pitch, Rotary, Reverb, Tremolo, Wah.
* FX8: Chorus, Compressor/Dynamics, Delay, Drive, Filter, Flanger, Gate, MIDI, Multi Delay, Phaser, Pitch, Relay, Rotary, Reverb, Tremolo, Wah.
* Cliff's comments:

* Axe-Fx II:
** Use the dedicated X/Y buttons on the front panel.
** You can use the X/Y buttons on the front panel also as Quick-Jump buttons to quickly display the EDIT menu of specific blocks, assigned in I/O.
* FX8 and AX8:

It's not possible to have different modifier settings for X and Y, the architecture doesn't allow for this. source
Connecting on iOS and Bluetooth
Bluetooth Low Energy is required, be sure to check that your iDevice handles Bluetooth LE (Bluetooth 4.0+). It means at least iPad3 or iPhone4s
* Bluetooth for the AX8 : the use of a Yamaha UD-BT01 is recommended. Launch the app "midimttr" AppStore then FracPad
* Bluetooth for the AxeFx II/XL/XL+ : the use of the Yamaha MD-BT01 (note the different product reference !) is recommended. It will use both MIDI in/out ports of your AxeFx. Launch the app "midimttr" AppStore then FracPad

General
* Axe-Fx II XL+:
** The flagship Fractal Audio product. It provides effects in a 4x12 grid, including amp/cab modeling, and extensive routing options in a 19" rack device. It features multiple outputs, an effects loop and various digital I/O. The MFC-101 foot controller is connected through FASLINK. All Fractal Audio effect algorithms. The Axe-Fx II also support Tone Matching and IR Capture.
* AX8:
** The AX8 is an all-in-one floor version of the Axe-Fx II, designed for the gigging musician. It provides Quantum amp modeling and UltraRes Speaker Cab sims, plus hundreds of effects and the familiar 4x12 grid, with the same quality as the Axe-Fx II. It differs from the Axe-Fx in that it offers only one instance per preset of amp, cab, and some effects blocks (e.g. Reverb, Flanger, etc.) Also, certain esoteric effects found on the Axe-Fx are not included in the AX8 (Vocoder, Megatap, etc.) It has multiple outputs offering Humbuster technology, S/PDIF out, and an effects loop.
* Read the section in the AX8 manual about comparing the two devices.

Hardware
* Housing:
** Axe-Fx II: 19" rack device.
** AX8: floor device.
* Circuitry:
** The AX8 has the same converters and op-amps as the Axe-Fx II.

Foot control
* Axe-Fx II: for remote switching you need a separate controller such as the MFC-101.
* AX8: comes with 8 numbered assignable switches and 3 assignable F-switches. More information.

Amp model controls
* Axe-Fx II: amp settings are adjusted through menus.
* AX8: provides physical controls with LEDs.

Effects and parameters
* The Axe-Fx II offers the full set of all effect algorithms. Many of the effects are available in more than one instance (two Amp blocks etc.). Compared to the AX8 (and FX8) there are a few differences in X/Y switching.
* The AX8 offers a selection of the effect algorithms (listed here). Compared to the AX8 (and FX8) there are a few differences in blocks supporting X/Y switching. There is one instance available of each effect, for example single Compressor block, Amp, Cab, Pitch etc, wth some exceptions. All "types" within a specific effect (all amp models, all compressor types etc.) are included.
* The AX8 has an impressive amount of CPU power but not as much as the Axe-Fx II. It'll disable blocks automatically when CPU usage (preset size) gets too high.
* The AX8 has more Looper time.
* Compared to the AX8, the Axe-Fx II offers additional functionality, such as:
** Global Blocks.
** Adjustable Input Impedance.
** Tremolo in the Amp block.
** Room ambience, De-Phase, mic modeling and channel strip modeling in the Cab block.
** Tone Matching.
** IR Capture.

User interface
* Axe-Fx II:
** Boots to the RECALL screen.
** Press LAYOUT to see the grid.
** There are four NAV buttons and PAGE buttons to navigate and a dedicated VALUE knob.
** Dedicated X and Y buttons.
* AX8:
** Boots to the Footswitch Page.
** Instead of a LAYOUT button, the grid is accessed as the second page of the main menu. When on the grid, press EXIT to return to the Footswitch page.
** Instead of NAV buttons, you will primarily use the E/NAV knob to get around menu pages. Instead of a VALUE knob you’ll use A,B,C,D, and E knobs.
** Instead of dedicated X and Y buttons, you’ll press and hold a footswitch to toggle X/Y for an effect, or if no footswitch is assigned, select or edit the effect and double-tap EDIT.
* Editing shortcuts are different because of the hardware design.

Grid, presets and scenes
* The AX8 supports scene switching. It lets you specify the default scene which is loaded after switching presets. It has the same 4x12 grid as the Axe-Fx II, and supports the same kind of routing.
* The Axe-Fx II and AX8 cannot share presets. You can transfer individual block settings from one product to another using the software editors. It's also possible to convert presets with FracTool 3rd party software.
* The AX8 doesn't provide the Mixer block and Feedback Send/Return blocks.
* When using the FXL block to create an AUX output, the FXL block must be placed in parallel rather than series. (Unlike the Axe-Fx II, the AX8 does not detect when a plug has been inserted into INPUT 2.)

I/O
* Analog:
** The AX8 has no rear Input 1 jacks.
* Digital I/O:
** Axe-Fx II: USB Audio, AES, S/PDIF.
** AX8: S/PDIF Out.
* Expression pedals and external switches:
** Axe-Fx II XL+: two PEDAL jacks.
** AX8: four PEDAL jacks.
* More information about AX8 I/O.

Fractal Audio quotes
* "When I designed the AX8 I designed a product based on my 25 years playing as a pro and what I used 99% of the time during a gig. Even with the Axe-Fx II 99% of the time I dial up an amp, a cab and a few effects. What I care about most is a great tone. The Axe-Fx amp modeling algorithms are the best in the world. I wanted to design something portable and affordable enough to get those algorithms into the hands of a lot more players." source
* "They are very cool. They're not an Axe-Fx but they're close. Same amp and cab modeling. Stripped down effects section. Two 450 MHz DSPs; one for amp modeling the other for effects/housekeeping. Uses the same silent switch technology as the MFC-101 Mark III and FX8. Switches are assignable per patch via our new "Switch Assign Matrix" feature." source
* "It's pretty much "Axe-Fx Lite". There are send/return blocks so you can make series routings that are longer. All the advanced parameters are available in the amp block, you access them via the traditional edit menu. The dedicated Bass, Mid, etc. knobs can be accessed at any time. And it sounds like an Axe-Fx, so there's that." source
* "I'll just say a few things: source
** It is not an Axe-Fx. It won't be able to do two amps or two cabs. It won't have things like the Vocoder and other esoteric blocks. It's a stripped down floor version at an aggressive price.
** It will have G3 modeling and user IR slots. It has two dual-core DSPs, one for amp modeling the other for effects. These DSPs are slower than the ones in the Axe-Fx so it won't be able to do two instance of amps.
** There will be block compatibility between the Axe-Fx and the AX8 meaning you can copy blocks from your Axe-Fx presets into the AX8.
* "There will be no pay-to-play stuff. All amp models from the Axe-Fx II will be included as well as all the Drives, etc." source
* "The DSPs used in the Axe-Fx are far too costly and require exotic cooling that is not suitable for a floor application. The AX8 covers the needs of 99% of performing guitar players." source
* "The Axe-Fx II can run multiple instances of amps, cabs and most effects. The AX8 cannot. The processors used in the AX8 are not nearly as powerful as the processors used in the Axe-Fx II. They are also significantly less expensive." source
* "AX8 and Axe-Fx II share the same code base so any updates to the Axe-Fx II apply to the AX8." http://forum.fractalaudio.com/axe-fx-ii-discussion/103735-axe-fx-ii-quantum-rev-1-00-public-beta-13.html#post1241527 source]
* "Same grid as Axe-Fx II. 512 user cab slots, 512 preset slots. Same factory amps and cabs as Axe-Fx II. Same high-quality, low-noise design as Axe-Fx II XL+. True differential I/O to the converters, not the single-ended stuff used in consumer-grade gear. Silent Switch technology from the MFC-101 Mark III. Humbuster I/Os. Most importantly it has Quantum and the "Fractal Sound". source
* "Layout grid which is just like the Axe-Fx II." source
* "The AX8 was built to a price point with quality of sound the primary consideration. It's primary use is as a live performance product. A color LCD and USB audio were not deemed pertinent for the intended application. Had those been included the price would be much higher than $1399." source
* "The AX8 uses the same converters as the Axe-Fx II. We put the money where people can't see it but where they can hear it." source
* "The AX8 and FX8 uses the same converters (CS4272-CZZ) and op-amps. The circuit design in the FX8 is necessarily much more complex to support true-bypass switching (without pops and clicks) and to optimize the outputs for use in 4CM. The AX8 removes the dedicated true bypass switching circuitry and simplifies the output design to save money. The cost savings is used towards an extra DSP." source
* (Can the Ax8 run a stereo UR cab and the AxII HD reverb?) "Yes, with ease." source
* "It does not have the vocoder and several of the other more esoteric effects. It does have the looper, synth and all the bread-and-butter effects. And it has the beautiful high-quality reverb from the Axe-Fx and FX8 (because I'm a reverb junkie). Most importantly, though, it sounds like an Axe-Fx." source
* "The AX-8 is not an Axe-Fx II on the floor. If it was it would cost a heck of a lot more than it does. It uses the exact same modeling code as the Axe-Fx II. The models in the AX-8 at release were not completely sync'd with the Axe-Fx II but the underlying algorithms are identical. IOW the AX-8 was roughly equivalent to Quantum 1.00. The upcoming firmware release syncs them exactly. The overwhelming majority of people love the AX-8 and understand it's place in the Fractal Audio model line-up. Putting an Axe-Fx II on the floor wasn't feasible due to the DSPs used in the Axe-Fx II requiring active cooling and being very expensive. The AX-8 was designed as a lower cost, simpler product that would address the needs of 99% of users. Power users will want an Axe-Fx II which is still the best modeler in the world."
