About the factory presets
 +

 +
Fractal Audio's products have factory presets installed: 3 sets of 128 presets (Banks A, B and C). The presets demonstrate amp tones (Bank A) and effects (Bank B and C).
 +

 +
Factory presets occupy regular preset slots, which are not read-only. This means that you can empty or overwrite factory prestts. You can always restore them, see below.
 +

 +
Fractal Audio updates the factory presets periodically and makes them available on the website and the user forum. Older versions can be downloaded from the unofficial archive

Fractal Audio provides a separate <q>Bank</q> file for each bank:
 +
* Bank A (000-127)
 +
* Bank B (128-255)
 +
* Bank C (256-383)
 +

 +
In addition, an <q>All-Banks</q> file that contains all three banks is included. Always read the included <q>READ_ME.txt</q> file for more up-to-date information.
 +

 +
Use Fractal-Bot, either the embedded version inside an editor, or by using the standalone version, to upload a <samp>.syx</samp> bank file to the hardware.
 +

 +
To select and import an individual preset from a bank file, use the Import function in Edit; Select a bank first and then pick the preset to import. Alternately, the Preset Manager in the editor can display all the presets contained in a bank or all-banks file, allowing you to select desired presets and drag them to specific slots. In the left browser pane drag or browse to the desired bank file and let the editor scan the file.
 +

 +
Don't forget to refresh the list of presets in the editor's Preset Picker window or Manage Presets window, afterwards. Clicking the Refresh Button () is the quick way.

Audition factory presets
Fractal Audio periodically updates the factory presets for current processors.
+
Points of interest when auditioning factory presets:

* download current factory presets
+
* If you're not the first owner of the device, start by reading and following the steps in <q>How to reset Axe-Fx III, FM9, or FM3 to a "factory fresh" condition</q>.
* download older versions from the unofficial archive

Use Fractal-Bot to upload factory preset banks to the hardware. To select and upload individual presets from a bank, use the software editor.
+
:The previous owner could have modified, moved, or deleted factory presets, which can change your perception of how the presets and the modeler actually sounds. Ensuring the unit is in a <q>factory fresh</q> state is the first step toward your best experience.
 +
* The presets are configured for FRFR output devices such as studio monitors, headphones, etc., with Amp Modeling and Cab Modeling enabled in the Global Settings menu, and using the instrument input on the device.
 +
* If possible, play the presets in stereo, with the volume turned up, to hear the presets at their best. If you're running mono, and audio output in the I/O menu is set to <q>Sum L+R</q>, phase cancellation may occur. When using output mode <q>Copy L>R</q> in the I/O menu, you'll lose the part of the signal that's hardwired to the right channel. That might be a Ping Pong delay or a stereo Cab block with both sides hard-panned.
 +
* For easier control, use the editor.
 +
* The factory presets often use External 1 to control various parameters in Wah, VolPan, Rotary, Delay, and probably other blocks.

Auditioning factory presets
+
:By default, the pedal will be disabled when it is toe-up/heel-down. To take advantage of these defaults confirm that your foot controller is defined correctly. See <q>GLOBAL EXPRESSION SETUP</q> in the Introduction section of the Owners Manuals for more information.
 +
* Preset output levels can vary from preset to preset, though a great effort is made to minimize this. If a factory preset makes the Out 1 Clip LED blink, the overall signal level in the digital domain is too hot. To solve this, turn down Level in the Amp block or in the Global EQ.
 +
* If you're wondering why an amp model in a factory preset doesn't sound exactly the same as your own amplifier, read <q>Why Your Amp Doesn't Sound Like Our Amp</q>.
 +
* Just like real amps, presets are sensitive to the type of guitar and its pickups.
 +
* If you think you've encountered an issue with a factory preset, report it as a possible bug on the user forum.

I use and prefer low output pickups and the presets work fine for me. I just consider them a starting point as everyone should.

If you're running mono and audio output in the I/O menu is set to “Sum L+R”, phase cancellation may occur. This can happen if the preset contains an Enhancer block in Classic Mode, or a micro delay in the Cab block. Or when a preset contains a Delay block with the Phase Rev parameter engaged.

(Cygnus v16) I tested every preset on three guitars this time around: 1) Anderson HSS, 2) American Deluxe Strat SSS 3) Kiesel Vader long scale HH (BareKnuckle). Multiple beta testers also went through the set, and Cliff reviewed Bank A.

Firmware updates may have an impact on the installed factory presets.

Axe-Fx III
After installing new firmware, Amp blocks have to be reset only if the firmware release notes say so. Read this: Reset the Amp

The Axe-Fx III has 384 factory presets, divided over 3 banks (A B C). Many of these were ported from the Axe-Fx II and optimized for the III, adding scenes and new features. The factory presets use Input 1 (instrument) and Output 1 with Cab Modeling.

The Axe-Fx III, FM9 and FM3 have 384 factory presets, divided over 3 banks: A, B, and C. The factory presets use Input 1 (instrument) and Output 1 with amplifier and speaker cabinet modeling and are configured for stereo output. You can use an expression pedal in presets which use External Controller 1. See your modeler's manual for information how to configure this.

Axe-Fx III owners may notice the suffix "FM3" or slight variations in the names of some of the FM3 presets. This was done to indicate that the preset has changed. In some cases, the Axe-Fx presets were larger and wouldn't fit. In other cases, we took advantage of capabilities that were new or improved since those presets were originally created (some in the time of the Ultra!). In other cases, "bonus scenes" or features were added. We also replaced some near-duplicate presets with new creations.

About the factory presets

Fractal Audio's products have factory presets installed: 3 sets of 128 presets (Banks A, B and C). The presets demonstrate amp tones (Bank A) and effects (Bank B and C).

Factory presets occupy regular preset slots, which are not read-only. This means that you can empty or overwrite factory prestts. You can always restore them, see below.

Fractal Audio updates the factory presets periodically and makes them available on the website and the user forum. Older versions can be downloaded from the unofficial archive

(Re)install factory presets

Fractal Audio provides a separate Bank file for each bank:

 • Bank A (000-127)
 • Bank B (128-255)
 • Bank C (256-383)

In addition, an All-Banks file that contains all three banks is included. Always read the included READ_ME.txt file for more up-to-date information.

Use Fractal-Bot, either the embedded version inside an editor, or by using the standalone version, to upload a .syx bank file to the hardware.

Don't forget to refresh the list of presets in the editor's Preset Picker window or Manage Presets window, afterwards. Clicking the Refresh Button (Refresh button) is the quick way.

Audition factory presets

Points of interest when auditioning factory presets:

The previous owner could have modified, moved, or deleted factory presets, which can change your perception of how the presets and the modeler actually sounds. Ensuring the unit is in a factory fresh state is the first step toward your best experience.
 • The presets are configured for FRFR output devices such as studio monitors, headphones, etc., with Amp Modeling and Cab Modeling enabled in the Global Settings menu, and using the instrument input on the device.
 • If possible, play the presets in stereo, with the volume turned up, to hear the presets at their best. If you're running mono, and audio output in the I/O menu is set to Sum L+R, phase cancellation may occur. When using output mode Copy L>R in the I/O menu, you'll lose the part of the signal that's hardwired to the right channel. That might be a Ping Pong delay or a stereo Cab block with both sides hard-panned.
 • For easier control, use the editor.
 • The factory presets often use External 1 to control various parameters in Wah, VolPan, Rotary, Delay, and probably other blocks.
By default, the pedal will be disabled when it is toe-up/heel-down. To take advantage of these defaults confirm that your foot controller is defined correctly. See GLOBAL EXPRESSION SETUP in the Introduction section of the Owners Manuals for more information.
 • Preset output levels can vary from preset to preset, though a great effort is made to minimize this. If a factory preset makes the Out 1 Clip LED blink, the overall signal level in the digital domain is too hot. To solve this, turn down Level in the Amp block or in the Global EQ.
 • If you're wondering why an amp model in a factory preset doesn't sound exactly the same as your own amplifier, read Why Your Amp Doesn't Sound Like Our Amp.
 • Just like real amps, presets are sensitive to the type of guitar and its pickups.
 • If you think you've encountered an issue with a factory preset, report it as a possible bug on the user forum.

FRACTAL AUDIO QUOTES

[1] The presets were dialed in loud so as to be sure the Fletcher-Munson effect did not influence the sound.

[2] I use and prefer low output pickups and the presets work fine for me. I just consider them a starting point as everyone should.

[3] (Cygnus v16) I tested every preset on three guitars this time around: 1) Anderson HSS, 2) American Deluxe Strat SSS 3) Kiesel Vader long scale HH (BareKnuckle). Multiple beta testers also went through the set, and Cliff reviewed Bank A.

Firmware updates

Firmware updates may have an impact on the installed factory presets.

After installing new firmware, Amp blocks have to be reset only if the firmware release notes say so. Read this: Reset the Amp

Read these for more information:

Axe-Fx III - FM3 - FM9

The Axe-Fx III, FM9 and FM3 have 384 factory presets, divided over 3 banks: A, B, and C. The factory presets use Input 1 (instrument) and Output 1 with amplifier and speaker cabinet modeling and are configured for stereo output. You can use an expression pedal in presets which use External Controller 1. See your modeler's manual for information how to configure this.

The list below is based on firmware 19.02 (Cygnus) for the Axe-Fx III.

FRACTAL AUDIO QUOTES

[4] Axe-Fx III owners may notice the suffix "FM3" or slight variations in the names of some of the FM3 presets.

The same applies to FM9 factory presets.

Ambient soundscapes with automatic volume swells and shifted detuned stereo delays from Plex Delays. Play slowly. Amp: Band-Commander. FM3 and FM9 preset: ping pong delay, phaser and resonator, and Friedman amp, different scenes.

114 - COMPURHYTHM | COMPY JAM FM9 | COMPY JAM
Complex preset that turns the device into a drum computer. External Controller 1 generates sort of a drum fill. FM3 and FM9: lite versions.

115 - GNOME MAN'S LANDS | GNOME MAN'S LAND FM9 | GNOME-MANS LAND FM3
Pitch-shifted 100% wet delay trails (no dry), panned left/right by an LFO, with reverb from a Multitap Delay. FM3 and FM9: alternative versions.

116 - STEVENS REBEL YELL | STEVENS REBEL FM9 | STEVENS REBEL FM3
Preset by Fractal Audio artist Steve Stevens, reproducing the guitar sound in Billy Idol's Rebel Yell. Uses a Tone Match block instead of a cab (not on FM3/FM9). External Controller 1 introduces the raygun effect in a scene. Amp: Atomica High. Different scenes per device.

117 - HEVY DEVY
Preset by Fractal Audio artist Devin Townsend. Amps: various. Incorporates a trick for smoother engaging / bypassing of the Wah.

118 - PETE-A-PALOOZA | PETE-A-PALOOZA FM9 | PETE-FEST FM3
Preset by tone connoisseur Pete Thorn. Amps: various. FM3 and FM9: light versions.

119 - LARRY MITCHELL NY STEAK | LARRY MITCHELL NY FM9 | LM NEW YORK STEAK FM3
Creative preset by Fractal Audio artist Larry Mitchell. Dual amps (FM3: single). The L/R panned sounds are by design. Presets are different per device.

120 - MARK DAY'S RECTO CYGNUS | MARK DAY'S RECTO FM9 | MARK DAY'S RECTO FM3
Massive high-gain preset by in-house Fractal Audio artist Mark "too much gain" Day. Dual amps in FM9 preset.

121 - FREMEN'S DRONES OF ARRAKIS | FREMEN'S FM9 DRONES | FREMEN'S MINI DRONES (FM3)
Preset by preset designer Fremen: solo over synth drone chords, with ducking delay. Amp: USA IIC++. The title refers to the Dune series. FM3 and FM9: one synth instead of two. Envelope-driven delay feedback.

122 - BRETT'S PARTY PACK
Preset by Fractal Audio artist Brett Kingman ("Burgs"), featuring various amp models.

123 - BRETT'S PARTY PACK 2
Another preset by Brett Kingman ("Burgs"), featuring the ODS-100 and Triptik amp models.

124 - AUSTIN BUDDY'S XTCS | AUSTIN BUDDY'S XTCS FM9 | AUSTIN BUDDY'S XTCS FM3
Preset by preset designer AustinBuddy, featuring the Euro Blue and Red (Bogner Ecstasy) models. Control Switch 2 controls the Input Boost in the amp block.

125 - LEON'S LIVE | LEON'S LIVE FM9 | LEON'S LIVE FM3
Gig preset by Fractal Audio artist and YouTuber Leon Todd. Demonstrates the use of multiband compression and the Multitap Delay, and EQ-ing to create a lo-fi sound. External Controller 1 engages the Pitch block for pitch detuning. Also uses Control Switches. Amps: USA Lead (high gain) and Band-Commander (clean). Breakdown by Leon Todd FM3 and FM9: lite versions.

126 - OUT1:FOH OUTx:CAB
This preset shows how to send a signal with cab modeling to Front-Of-House (Out 1), and a second signal without cab modeling to a separate output to feed a power amplifier with a traditional guitar cabinet.

127 - AMP MATCH TEMPLATE | 4CM TEMPLATE (FM9) | PERFORMANCE TUTORIAL (FM3)
Template for matching the sound of real amplifiers using Tone Match. Pedal 2 (directly connected to the Axe-Fx) enables "Reference Solo". More information about Tone Matching The FM3 has an alternative preset because it doesn't support Tone Match. The FM9 preset is a template for "Four Cable Method" connection setups.

128 - BYPASS
All inputs are connected straight to the outputs, so the input signal is the output signal, effectively creating a bypass and DI signals from all analog outputs.

FX8

FX8-mk2-top.jpg

Cooper Carter compiled a list of all FX8 factory presets, including the amps (traditional and amp models) that were used when creating them. Download the list (version: August 2015)

If you place the FX8 in front of your amp, you won't experience the factory presets as they are intended. Some of these are configured for POST only (FX8 in the effects loop of an amp) or 4CM. An easy way to overcome this, is connecting a patch cable between OUT [PRE] L MONO and IN [POST] L, and connecting OUT [POST] L to the amp.

Some factory presets are configured for stereo output and won't sound like they should in a mono setup.
